DIMENSIONS:  5.40 cm (2.13 in.) long.

DESCRIPTION: A cast bronze Byzantine buckle, comprised of an integral loop and plate and a separate tongue. The rectangular loop has a chamfered outer border with projecting corners and a recessed couch for the tongue. The D-shaped buckle plate is pierced by a large cross flanked by two circular holes with a pelta (shield) behind. Three pierced lugs for attachment on the reverse. Intact. Very dark green, smooth and even patina with exposed metal surfaces showing in a few spots.

PROVENANCE: Ex old English private collection.
