Group of Seven Roman Red Slip Ware and Other Ceramic Fragments
DESCRIPTION:
* Ring foot of a Terra Sigillata bowl or deep dish. Makers stamp in the center, possibly reading ORVAPA. Possible graffiti on exterior. Shiny, hard red surfaces. Gaulish or Italian.
* Body fragment of a large terra sigillata vessel. Outside decorated with mold-made impressions of palmettes and other foliage in two registers divided by double lines. North African or Spanish.
* Body fragment of a large terra sigillata vessel of Italian or Gaulish manufacture, lower register with draped female figure (possibly Venus / Aphrodite) and wreath or circle of acanthus leaf design, the two divided by a vertical triple festoon. Upper register with repeating circular pattern.
* Narrow body fragment from a red slip vessel, probably of Iberian or North African manufacture. Pale, matt orange slip. Fragmentary circular and linear motif, possibly a trophy of arms.
* Small fragment from a terra sigillata vessel, probably Gaulish. Well preserved, glossy brown-red slip inside and out on a hard, fine grained fabric. Exterior decoration of palmette inside concentric circles.
* Most of the ring foot of a large terra sigilatta bowl. Very fine pale red clay with shiny brick red slip. Interior with impressed circle, over-stamped by a long, narrow illegible maker’s mark.
* Shard from the shoulder of an oil lamp just below the discus. Gray to beige clay lacking any slip, decorated with raised mold-made decoration of two bunches of grapes with part of a braided circular border above.
PROVENANCE: In a California private collection, 2001-2010.
