Ptolemaic Ceramic Oil Lamp
CULTURE / REGION OF ORIGIN: Late Ptolemaic Egypt.
DATE: Circa 150 BCE to 50 CE .
DIMENSIONS:   7.6 cm (3.25in.)

DESCRIPTION: Intact. A ceramic oil lamp from Ptolemaic Egypt. Mold-made from fine grained brick red clay. A small closed handle on one side with volute pattern, a vestigial form of earlier Hellenistic types. The body otherwise round. Another volute pattern, resembling somewhat an Egyptian papyriform column and capitol, extends down the length of the nozzle. A slightly raised ring foot at the bottom. Carbon staining from use around the wickhole.

PROVENANCE: Formerly in a German private collection, purchased in 1994. In a U.S. private collection since 2005.
