East Greek Kylix
CULTURE / REGION OF ORIGIN: East Greek (most likely Rhodes Chios, or Samos) DATE: 7th – 6th Century BCE DIMENSIONS: Diameter with handles 16.2 cm (6.3 in), Height 5.0 cm (2.0 in.)
DESCRIPTION: Intact. A shallow, two handled, East Greek Kylix. The interior is
covered in a slip varying from dark brown to rust in color. The handles show remains of a single band of brown decoration,
while brown covers the outer wall of the vessel above the carination and below the rim. The underside is decorated with a
five point star design in dark brown slip that emanates from the small ring foot and partly overlaps with two thin and one
thick band of the same dark brown. The vessel fabric is thin, of very fine grained clay, and ranges from a pale cream to pale
pink in color. An uncommon type on the market.
PROVENANCE: Formerly
in the collection of Lord Dayton of Corran, the collection formed between 1960 and 2000.
