Cypriot Trefoil Juglet
CULTURE / REGION OF ORIGIN: Cyprus. DATE: 4th Century BCE (Cypro-Classical
II period). DIMENSIONS: 6.4 cm (2.5 in.) tall, 8.3 cm (3.25 in.) maximum width.
DESCRIPTION:Intact. A Cypriot juglet, resting on a wide ring foot, with low, flattened disc-like body, wide
shoulder with a slight carination near the top, and a trefoil mouth, the two side portions flattened and the spout tightly
pinched, with a flat sectioned handle dropping from the back of the rim to the lower part of the shoulder. The vessel is decorated
with bands of orange-brown to brown-umber just above the ring foot, on the widest part of the body and around the mouth. There
is a simple design of three six-pointed stars on the shoulder. The fabric is a very fine beige clay, darkened by staining
all around. Much of the decoration is worn off on one side, slightly faded on the other. Very attractive shape.
PROVENANCE: Formerly in the private English collection of Mr. Peter Negus, the collection formed
between the 1920s and 2007 from various sources in the UK and abroad.
