Item Number: CA-07-69

DATE:  4th Century BC (Cypro-Classical II period)

DIMENSIONS:  6.4 cm (2.5 in.) tall, 8.3 cm (3.25 in.) maximum width

DESCRIPTION:Intact. A Cypriot juglet, resting on a wide ring foot, with low, flattened disc-like body, wide shoulder with a slight carination near the top, and a trefoil mouth, the two side portions flattened and the spout tightly pinched, with a flat sectioned handle dropping from the back of the rim to the lower part of the shoulder. The vessel is decorated with bands of orange-brown to brown-umber just above the ring foot, on the widest part of the body and around the mouth. There is a simple design of three six-pointed stars on the shoulder. The fabric is a very fine beige clay, darkened by staining all around. Some of the decoration is worn off on one side, slightly faded on the other. Very attractive shape.

SPECIAL NOTES:  This small but elegant vessel is a good example of the transition between older "native" Cypriot pottery traditions and Classical Greek types that were rapidly becoming widespread throughout the Mediterranean basin, as highlighted by the pinched trefoil mouth.

PROVENANCE: Formerly in the private English collection of Mr. Peter Negus, the collection formed between the 1920s and 2007 from various sources in the UK and abroad.
