Late Roman Trail Decorated Glass Bead

CULTURE / REGION OF ORIGIN: Late Roman Empire; Eastern Mediterranean, probably Levantine coast.
DATE: Late 4th - 5th Century AD
DIMENSIONS: 2.5 cm (0.98 in.) long.
DESCRIPTION: A barrel shaped glass bead of the late Roman period. The bead appears black, though it may be a dark purple or brown, and is decorated around its central axis with a thick wavy trail of yellowish glass that may originally have been white. Parts of the trail have dislodged, leaving shallow recesses in the bead, which is further decorated around the stringing holes at either end with thin trails of white glass, making four to five revolutions around each end. Essentially intact but for the portions of missing trailing.
