CULTURE / REGION OF ORIGIN: Sassanian Empire; Iran or Mesopotamia.
DATE: Late 4th - Early 7th Century CE
DIMENSIONS: 7.2 cm (2.8 in.) tall without feet; 8.5 cm (3.3 in.) total height at rest.

DESCRIPTION: Intact. A Sassanian tripod-footed bottle of very pale green glass, with a globular body, short tubular neck that widens towards the top until it opens to a wider ring shape before narrowing again. The vessel's simple rim has been smoothed in the flame. There is a pontil mark on the round base. The vessel rests on three simple feet that have been pinched out from the base. One of these is slightly longer than the others, causing the vessel to rest at an awkward angle. A very thin hard layer of beige to yellow encrustation covers much of the surface and some of the interior.

PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Welsh private collection formed between the 1970s and 2008.

PUBLISHED: Bonhams, London, ANTIQUITIES, 29 April, 2009, Lot #302, listed and illustrated on Page 174.
